The Great Escape 2009, Brighton, May 14th-16th.
What? The Great Escape Festival. The festival’s organisers have just announced the first of the lineup for 2009. In case you’re unfamiliar with the event it’s generally a chance to see some good upcoming bands before they get big. There are a few bigger names thrown in for good measure and to show the new guys how it is done. A wristband gets you into all participating venues accross Brighton. // more

Chairlift @ Kings College, March 31st.
What? Chairlift were one of the best new bands to emerge last year from a Brooklyn scene that was haemorrhaging good bands! Their debut ‘Does You Inspire You’ is a great album which is part pop, part Portishead, always hard to pin down exactly. It features the insanely catchy single ‘Bruises’ which has to be up there as contender for one of the songs of last year, you may have heard it on an iPod advert if it sounds familiar. // more

Screaming Ballerinas @ Madame Jojo’s, Jan 30th.
What? Screaming Ballerinas. This London band make colourful guitar pop tunes with a seventies edge to them. Dreamy voice comes courtesy of Laura Jean Marsh who conjures up vocals comparable to Blondie and Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays. Support is not yet confirmed but will be provided by Seb Collective and it sounds like they have a rota of easy on the ears artists working with them. // more

On Repeat: Fanfarlo – Pilot
Those nice guys in Fanfarlo have just sent me this free track from their forthcoming album ‘Reservoir’. It’s another beautiful acoustic guitar lead emotional number. For me they lie somewhere between Arcade Fire and Belle and Sebastian, a good somewhere. They deserve to be huge. See them at their Valentine’s day gig. // more
