Just For Kicks – Air France, Wave Machines, Mumford & Sons

This week there’s a beautiful Friendly Fires remix from Air France, a bit of a fuck you from Liverpool’s finest Wave Machines and a folk heart string puller from Mumford & Sons.

Friday

I’m not always a massive fan of remixes but this re-working of Friendly Fires gem ‘Skeleton Boy’ by Air France hits the spot. Apparently they don’t usually do remixes as the Swedish duo consider them a bit crap but if they do then they really tear the track to bits and make it their own. They’ve done themselves justice and the remix nicely slips into their body of work, which if you’re unfamiliar with, is superb.  I hate to call it a chill album so check out the laid back Sunday morning vibes of their debut No Way Down, one of the best of 2008.

A recent discovery of mine Liverpool’s Wave Machines are a joy to behold live and it sounds like they’ve got the recorded material to back it up. I can’t wait for their debut album, due out later this year, but for now wrap your ears around this perfect slab of cheeky Scouse indie pop. Some inspired lyrics – it won’t take long for you to hear what I mean.

Sunday

A really powerful folk song from London’s own Mumford & Sons. I’ve been playing this track for weeks since stumbling across it on MySpace somehow and have recently learnt that a friend’s brother is in the band. Happy days. This has a Bonnie Prince Billy intensity to it, yes it’s that good. The band have just announced a headline show at Scala on April 8th, look out for a post on that coming right up.
