Just For Kicks – Frank Turner, Harlem, Danny Schmidt.
Posted by: musicmuleblog
I take a bow to SXSW 2009 for inspiration for this week’s track selections. All of the Just For Kicks artists I’ve picked played this year’s festival and two of them call Austin their home. Leave some comments and let me know what you think…
Friday
Frank Turner used to be in UK hardcore band Million Dead but in his own words ‘no-one gave a shit’ about them. Now as a solo artist he performs lyrically savvy, powerful, acoustic lead songs and ‘now people do give a shit’. Breaking the mould from my electro influenced Friday tracks of recent weeks, Long Live The Queen is a sad but ultimately uplifting acoustic sing along.
For Fans Of: Jeffrey Lewis, Chris T-T, Kid Harpoon, Lightspeed Champion.

Austin punks Harlem impressed me with their raw, energetic punk at SXSW. Witty lyrics, jangly guitars and great bass lines too. On their MySpace they claim: ‘the only band we like is nirvana. the only album we like is nevermind. the only song we like is smells like teen spirit’. Make of that what you will. I love the song title guys!
For Fans Of: The Clash, Green Day, The Ramones and er… Nirvana.

Also haling from Austin Texas Danny Schmidt is a folk singer songwriter of the highest order. Haunting acoustic ballads and world wise lyrics. This is a great song. Look out for a post on his London gig in late April coming soon.
For Fans Of: Johnny Cash, Frank Black, Iron & Wine, Willy Mason.
