Review: White Denim @ Rough Trade East, June 22nd.

White Denim are in town and all is well with the world! The Austin 3-piece played a free set at Rough Trade Records yesterday to promote the release of their amazing new album ‘Fits’. Anyone who was put off by it being an instore should have had more faith in these guys as they were, as always, electrifyingly good.

The band played a break neck speed set travelling seamlessly from old ‘Worlout Holiday’ favouritesĀ like ‘Mess your Hair Up’, ‘All You Really Have to Do’ to new tracks like the excellent ‘Say What You Want’ and the Spanish lyriced ‘El Hard Attack Dcwyw’.

Set highlights for me though came from ‘Fits’ track ‘I’d Have It The Way You Are’ and older, non-album track ‘Goldie Locks’. Josh (drums) and Steve (bass) are the best rhythm section around these days and James’ (vocals/guitar) voice has matured into one of the great rock voices of our time while his guitar playing remains Hendrix-esque. The new material showcases the depth the band now has. From all out garage rock onslaughts to tender, psychedelic guitar jams.

You can find another video on the Music Mule youtube page. Apologies for the crappy sound. Also please note that drummer Josh Block is so good that he is slowly turning into a drum kit and his head became a cymbal half way through the show. Any sceptics who think this is just a cover up for a crappy camera angle please get in touch for further evidence.
The band play Heaven Under The Arches on July 8th. I implore you to buy the album and go see them live. Details below…
