On Repeat: Amazing Baby – Dead Light
Posted by: nick
‘Dead Light’ is taken from Amazing Baby’s frankly excellent debut album ‘Rewild’, which was out at the end of June. We were foolishly expecting them to fall flat on their face a little when it came to releasing a record proper and were resigned to them disappearing into the same puff of smoke from which they seemed to arrive in the UK, with a far from mesmerising performance at SWN festival last November.
For Fans Of: Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles.
Luckily that was not to be. The Brooklyn band who got to fame from rubbing shoulders with other recent NYC success stories like Chairlift and MGMT, to whom they have frequently been compared, have in months gone by built a solid reputation of their own with some explosive live performances including one at this years Great Escape Festival in Brighton.
Their sound is more akin to British rock and pop bands of old than of their American peers with obvious reference points being the likes of Pink Floyd, Bowie and even the Beatles. Lots of big riffs, theatrical strings, hazy vocals and a Bowie-esque glam rock sensibility. While being quite derivative of these bands of yesteryear they play the game to near perfection on their debut album ‘Rewild’ and sound different to a lot of what’s about at the moment.
This is underneath it all big rock music with hypnotic drums, psychedelic riffs, an unashamed sense of showmanship and just the right amount of seriousness to prissiness. Will Roan’s dreamy vocals on Head Light should be enough to whet your appetite. Highly recommended.
