On Repeat: Wild Beasts – Two Dancers.

Two Dancers is the second album from Kendal four-piece Wild Beasts. It builds on the promise of their Domino Records debut ‘Limbo Panto’ and sees the band combining their trademark oddness with some awesome Johnny Marr style guitar licks and booty shaking percussion. The result? One of the best albums of the year so far.

For Fans Of: The Smiths, The Week That Was, Eugene McGuinness.

Dual vocalists Hayden and Tom Fleming take it turns as ever to lead songs. Hayden’s falsetto still ranges from the sublime to the slightly ridiculous but when it hits that ridiculous level it’s less abrasive than on the last record and hopefully as a result a little less alienating for some listeners. The addictive, danceable and superbly titled ‘The Fun Powder Plot’ is one of the best of Hayden’s tracks but we could have just as happily chosen ‘This Is Our Lot’, ‘We Still Got The Taste Of Dancing…’ or single ‘Hooting and Howling’.

Fleming’s baritone is a powerful weapon in it’s own right. It provides a stark contrast to Hayden’s voice which you’ll hear backing him in ‘All The Kings Men’, a bit of an indie call to arms (“All You Pretty Things Looking For Somebody”) to the youth of middle England.

All in all, an inspired record.

Go see Wild Beasts at The Garage on October 8th, you won’t be disappointed.
