Like a photo on a dating website, the recorded, produced version of a band sometimes doesn’t translate into what they’re like in person. A band’s album is them shot from their best angle, accentuating their best features. Sometimes, when you meet them face-to-face, you wish you hadn’t bothered.
On record, the Passion Pit sound is one that seems to have been layered, polished, buffed and then polished again, until singer/writer Michael Angelakos can see his face in it. Live, there was a lot that could go wrong: Angelakos’ own soaring falsetto vocals are an absolutely integral part of their allure, and if they or the myriad beeps and bumps from the synths and percussion weren’t pitch-perfect, this show could have gone south quicker than Usain Bolt in a bobsleigh. Fortunately, our date for the evening turned out to be exactly what we signed-up for.
Their set kicked off with ‘Eyes As Candles’, and it was immediately evident that we were in for quite a show. Angelakos hit every single note, as he did all night. His are vocal chords that could support a cable car, and if you get the chance you should hear them for yourself. ’Make Light’ and ‘Folds In Your Hands’ soon charged the crowd up, and they were supplemented beautifully by the more tender sentiments of ‘To Kingdom Come’ and ‘Moths Wings’.
Two highlights were ‘Better Things’ and ‘I’ve Got Your Number’ from the mighty fine ‘Chunk Of Change’ EP. These songs, written as a Valentines Day gift for Angelakos’ girlfriend, are Passion Pit distilled. Joyous, creative, euphoric pop that’s hell bent on being the best date you ever had.
