On Repeat: Julian Casablancas – Phrazes For The Young

If you can ignore the annoying American spelling in the title then The Strokes front man has come up with one hell of a solo album. Julian Casablancas’ now infamous vocal style remains the same and while there’s definitely some songs that lend themselves to “The Strokes with synths” descriptions that have been kicking about, there’s a bit more to it than just that.

For Fans Of: The Strokes, Chairlift, Neon Neon.

Take for example the impressive ‘Ludlow St’ which actually has some pretty country guitar on it as does the amusingly titled ’4 Chords Of The Apocalypse’ along with some over the top organ work. It shouldn’t sound good but it does. ‘Left & Right In The Dark’ is a definite highlight and treads a little closer to home for The Strokes man, while single ’11th Dimension’ utilises a drum machine, synth and 80s riffing and ends up a lot of fun for it.

This thankfully feels like an album with the time taken to write proper songs and not just experiment with sounds.

Your move next The Strokes…
