Review: The Miserable Rich @ The Slaughtered Lamb, Nov 3rd.

Following two near impeccable sets from Vadoinmessico and Left With Pictures, headliners The Miserable Rich know they have their work cut out for them when they take the stage. Front man James de Malplaquet or James Miserable as he sometimes goes by is eager to praise the quality heavy lineup. But he does so confidently and knowingly.
Confident, one imagines, that his band has the quality to at the very least match the impressive talent we’ve already been spoilt by.
James has a great presence and most importantly a great voice. Not simply a voice that hits the right notes, which it does admirably, but one which betrays real emotion, as do his eyes. It makes all the difference to see someone feeling their songs as well as performing them. James is ably backed up with double bass, acoustic guitar and a string section of Willkommen Collective musicians Will and Mike who also feature in The Leisure Society.
‘The Boat Song’ quickly sets the bar high with it’s soaring vocals and emotive melodies. ‘Monkey’ sees the band get about as groovy as a folk collective can get. James likes his red wine and raises his glass to the crowd with a cheeky smile following their track ‘Pisshead’ which we’re told “rings pretty true with this band”.
What a fine way to welcome the winter this night was. Bellies filled with wine ‘n ‘beer and heads and hearts filled with melodies. I’m sure given the chance a few people would have curled up and slept the night where they were. Us included.
