On Repeat: Forest Fire – Survial
Posted by: nick
We first posted on Forest Fire‘s debut album ‘Survival’ back in July but we just plain felt like kicking up a little more fuss for what has proved a real, grower of an album. Frontman Mark Thresher we understand has nothing to do with the seemingly ill fated off licence chain of the same name.
For Fans Of: My Morning Jacket, Real Estate, The National.
Here’s what we said in July:
Slow Motion’ is taken from Brooklyn/Portland band Forest Fire’s debut album ‘Survival’ which was recorded over an eight month period across two locations as not all members live in the same place. Apparently a lot of it was done in less than five takes and sometimes there was only one mic for the whole band. A lot of overdubbing later and you have the likes of ‘Slow Motion’ which is a gorgeous if slightly ramshackle take on Americana with loose percussion, screeching guitar lines and Mark Thresher’s, Wayne Coyne meets Jim James, vocals.
Here’s what we say now:
This is a fantastic record with an airiness to it’s production that only grows warmer with time. Mark’s songs and lyrics are fantastic. Take the track ‘Fortune Teller’ (below) with it’s line ” Tonight I’m going to melt some faces with gatling gun social skills”. We like. ‘Sunshine City’ features gorgeous vocals from Sharon Van Etten. ‘Echoes Coming’ and it’s acoustic guitar line will ring around your head for days. ‘Thru My Gloves’ is Americana as it should be; blissful, melancholy and narrative. ‘Slow Motion’ ends the album with one of our tracks of the year.
