On Repeat: Dead Man’s Bones – Dead Man’s Bones
Posted by: nick
Dead Man’s Bones are an L.A. duo who recently dropped their self titled debut album, recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir. A children’s choir I hear you say? Who the bloody hell do they think they are? Pink Floyd?
For Fans Of: Ariel Pink, The White Stripes, Evangelicals, Arcade Fire, Port O’Brien.
Well no they’re not Pink Floyd, they are actually Californian’s Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields who site their influences as the Disney Haunted Mansion, doo wop and 60s girl groups. Believe it or not that actually goes pretty far towards describing their weird b-horror movie style sound. While at times the weirdness gets a little much these are few and far between as thankfully there are actually some great ideas and even better songs mixed up in the madness.
Take the two sample tracks we’ve featured, ‘In The Room Where You Sleep’ which has some organ action that could put The Doors to shame and then perhaps the album highlight, the downright groovy ‘Pa Pa Power’ which cracks out the synths for some Pinback esque action and that choir compliments the music perfectly with their call of “we will not destroy you, we will not destroy you”. Recorded in at most three takes the album has a rough n ready feel to it which suits the music down to the ground. Oooh it’s very good. Get it now!
