Gil Scott-Heron – I’m New Here

The 60 year old spoken word/soul legend Gil Scott-Heron from Chicago has made his first record in 16 years following two prison stints and a long running battle with drugs. XL Recordings boss Richard Russel went and signed the artist up while still in prison and Gil’s new album ‘I’m Not There’ (stream it all below) is the first fruit of that relationship. The title track is a cover of a 2005 Smog song no less!

For Fans Of: Curtis Mayfield, Massive Attack, Smog. For those who aren’t aware of Gil Scott-Heron’s work then The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is arguably his most famous song.

Also check out the video for the first single from I’m New Here, ‘Me and The Devil’ another re-working, this time of a Robert Johnson track.
