Dum Dum Girls, Yuck @ Old Blue Last, Feb 24th

Tonight was a tale of three halves: Yuck, La La Vasquez and Dum Dum Girls. One of the halves didn’t fit you see and we’ll give you a clue which one it was: La La Vasquez. We’re rarely harsh on these pages but we hope for their own sake this isn’t the day job. Otherwise though the night went stormingly in the tropical temperatures of The Old Blue Last.
Yuck are a buzzzzz band right now and quite rightly so. When a bands got the potential of these guys it’s only natural for people to get excited. No appearance again of the excellent ‘Automatic’ but their other MySpace hit ‘Georgia’ was out and in fine form with frontman Danny’s sister Ilana joining him for the sweet female vocal part which is delivered with gusto. All fuzzed up Dinosaur JR meets Weezer guitar parts, tight rhythms and and some impressive vocal parts from Danny are the order of the day.
It’s hard to believe that the band have only a handful of gigs (if that) under their belts. If they keep getting better they will surely break big at some point in the not to distant future. They’re next show is at the Stag’s Head on Friday with also so hot right now Spectrals. Check Yuck’s Blog for details.

We’re going to skip any further direct mention of La La Vasquez as they’ve already wasted too much of our night.
So onto a brief low-down on the first UK gig for Dum Dum Girls. The band lines up as four ladies from LA but in truth it’s really front lady Dee Dee’s project. Now these girls thankfully have songs as tight as their outfits. It’s a welcome change. We’re taken through a hard hitting set of most of our favourites from upcoming Sub Pop Records album ‘I Will Be’, including its glorious title track, single ‘Jail La La’ and ‘Bhang Bhang…’.
But perhaps the highlight of the evening was a cover of G.G. Allin’s ‘Don’t Talk To Me’ which we’d been hoping they would play since watching this little beauty. Dum Dum Girls play a handful more shows in London over the next week or so. Next up is Barden’s Boudoir tomorrow. See you there!

Dum Dum Girls – Don’t Talk To Me (G.G. Allin Cover) (live) by musicmule

I wanted to check out how Dum Dum Girls was last night as I’m going to try and catch a show this week but one thing in particular riled me. Why are Yuck so hyped all of a sudden? Aside from the fact one of them used to be in a band on XL and they have Matador/Transparent jocking them and whatever else, I can see no logical reason why? They sound like some Starsailor fans decided to have a go at “lo-fi indie pop 2010″ and the result is Elastica meets McFly covering Pains Of Being Pure At Heart really blandly. DULL DULL DULL.
They’re no Pains of Being Pure Of Heart but I think they’ve got a few good songs and are a new British band amongst all the awesome American stuff so why not get a little excited. They’ve not been given the keys to the city quite yet. Come see Dum Dum Girls tonight at Barden’s Boudoir and we can slog it out! haha P.S. It’s McFly (RIP) ain’t it and leave Elastica out of it altogether!
