Quasi – American Gong

American Gong is the eighth album from Portland Oregon band Quasi. The once husband and wife duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss is now a trio including bass player Joanna Bolme from Weiss’ other band. Some may have heard of Steven Malkmus & The Jicks?! Conveniently then Pavement are Quasi fans. Need we say more?

For Fans Of: Teenage Fanclub, My Bloody Valentine, Pavement.

Sam Coomes’ guitar and keyboard fuse melody with mayhem while his voice goes from tender aside to caterwaul regularly. His lyrics complete with a Modest Mouse like bite to them, hit the spot more often than not. Meanwhile his ex wife and former Sleater Kinney member Weiss is one hell of a drummer and without pretending to have much prior knowledge of Quasi we can hardly imagine them without Weiss’ rhythmic partner in crime Joanna Bolme.

If you enjoy the French vocal-led Laissez les Bon Temps Rouller, not even close to the album’s standout track, then you will be in for a treat. Did we mention that Dave Fridmann is one of the album’s mixers? Have you bought it yet? Click click click, etc.

American Gong by Quasi is out now on Domino Records. cd / lp / mp3 / iTunes.

As well as the Pavement curated ATP Festival you can catch them at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen on May 26th.
