Darwin Deez @ Madame Jojo’s, March 9th.

Last night’s show at the White Heat club night in Soho marked Darwin Deez‘s debut UK show. We’d previously heard a few mixed reports about the Deez live package and a friend said he’d rather see Phenomenal Hand Clap Band, also  playing London last night, than “that Napoleon Dynamite wannabe”. His jest was friendly but we have a feeling the last laugh was ultimately ours. Mwa ha ha!

Darwin Deez isn’t the tightest band you’re likely to see but the poodle haired main man’s approach to songwriting and performance feels fresh. Whether it’s his own secret tuning, or his surprisingly entertaining full band dance freak outs, he’s doing something exciting and new. For those interested enough to delve deeper there’s actually some killer songs behind what could otherwise be confused for an overly hipster approach to music.

An honourable mention goes also to rocky Aussie openers Children Collide who played an almost perfect Nirvana-esque set.
