SXSW 2010: Warpaint @ Austinist Party, Mohawks.
Posted by: nick
Warpaint are an all girl band from L.A. that have signed to legendary UK indie label Rough Trade Records. Ring any bells? If not – why not?! An early contender for performance of the festival was laid down by the band at the awesome Austinist showcase at a packed out Mohawks venue. Without wanting to sound sexist – girls aren’t supposed to rock this hard are they??!
For Fans Of: Television, Explosions In The Sky, Portishead.
The four piece consisting of Mily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums) are a tight knit unit who throw down one hell of a post-punk meets post-rock groove. There’s also a little freak-folk / tribal lilt to their beguiling music that sometimes reminds of elements of fellow lady legends M.I.A. and more recently New England’s Tune Yards.
With songs lasting about six minutes as a minimum today, including nauseatingly good recent single ‘Elephants’, it really is a transfixing performance that has us hungry for more even in the increasingly uncomfortable heat of the packed out indoor stage.
After SXSW Warpaint head out on a couple of U.S. support dates with the mighty Yeasayer and then head off on a European tour of their own, including a London date at The Luminaire in Kilburn. You’d be silly to miss them.

Nick,
I saw Warpaint as well at Mohawk. I had heard good things and they didn’t disappoint. I also saw First Aid Kit and Dan Black just after. Short sets, but very entertaining.
Great. I’d love to see Warpaint again, really enjoyed them. I hope I run into Dan Black and First Aid Kit too. Take a listen to Bear in Heaven and if you like it at all then go get blown away live!
