SXSW 2010: Washed Out, Austinist Party @ Mohawks

Playing his “first ever outdoor show” and only his tenth ever gig Washed Out stole the show at the Austinist Party on the  first day of SXSW 2010. Hailing from Perry, Georgia Washed Out or Ernest (Greene) to his friends has arguably spearheaded the new movement of ‘chillwave’ bands currently scrapping for space on the independent airwaves. But today there could be only one winner!

SXSW 2010: Small Black, Austinist Party @ Mohawks

Long Island duo Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner’s or Small Black were one of our must sees of SXSW 2010 and we’re glad to have ticked that box. No disappointment in sight here either. The boys’ dual vocals, keys and synth set up is added to live by a bassist and drummer/percussionist. The result is a show that is very much geared towards the party end of the spectrum.

SXSW 2010: Toro Y Moi, Austinist Party @ Mohawks

Toro Y Moi is Chazwick Bundick from Columbia, South Carolina. He’s another addition to the so called ‘chillwave’ genre currently presided over by Georgia’s Washed Out who incidentally Bundick is friends with and is set to play this very party later in the day. Toro’s music is a little less fluid than that of Washed Out’s, with less big hooks, but some gorgeous textures nonetheless.

SXSW 2010: Warpaint @ Austinist Party, Mohawks.

Warpaint are an all girl band from L.A. that have signed to legendary UK indie label Rough Trade Records. Ring any bells? If not – why not?! An early contender for performance of the festival was laid down by the band at the awesome Austinist showcase at a packed out Mohawks venue. Without wanting to sound sexist – girls aren’t supposed to rock this hard are they??!
