John Grant – Queen Of Denmark

So it was International Record Store Day on Saturday 16th April in case it passed you by. We chose to spend the day at our favourite London Record Store, Rough Trade West. As well as achieving near bankruptcy we were fortunate enough to stumble across the new album from John Grant , formerly of one of our favourite bands, The Czars. Midlake as his backing band you say? Where do we sign?
For Fans Of: The Czars, Midlake, Scott Walker.
John Grant has a voice that could melt even Gordon Brown’s tough old heart. As a result it’s always dominated whatever music it has been put to. Grant however seems to have met as near a musical match as possible in the form of his Bella Union label-mates Midlake. The Texans laid down the music for Queen Of Denmark during recording breaks from their own recent album ‘Courage Of Others’. Their folk driven 70s rock serves as the perfect envelope for Grant’s tender baritone. Better than Midlake’s own album? We think so. Better than the majority of The Czars material? Probably.
Be it the Midlake back story that sells it or not, this record looks set to finally get Grant the success he deserves after a career spent battling cocaine and alcohol and hardly a sniff (sorry) at the fame he is due.
For posterity here’s one of our favourite Czars song for you too.
