Peter Wolf Crier – Inter-Be

Peter Wolf Crier are a Minneapolis, Minnesota duo who have been getting a lot of online love for their debut album Inter-Be which, got its UK release on June 7th through the Jagjaguar label. The sample track we lead with is sublime album opener Crutch & Crane which is as catchy as it is beautiful.
For Fans Of: Bon Iver, The Dodos, Micah P Hinson.
Inter-Be never quite captures the haunting desolation of Justin Vernon’s (Bon Iver) 2007 debut, to which comparisons have understandably been drawn. This difference may be due to the fact that there are two in Peter Wolf Crier’s recording process, Peter Pisano (vocals/guitar/keys) and Brian Moen (drums/engineer). So then you don’t always get the feeling that the words are being spoken solely to you (there are exceptions to this) as you do on Bon Iver’s album, as in fact they probably weren’t being.
That said the songs were all born on one summer’s evening at the end of a writing dry spell for Pisano so bear that similar sound of a man in transition. There are comparisons too to be made between Pisano and fellow Mid-Western Vernon’s (cited as an influence/now a label mate as Gayngs) soulful vocal delivery and ear for an affecting melody.
Sonically though Peter Wolf Crier’s songs for us carry just as much similarity to the driving, percussive acoustic rock of American counterparts The Dodos. This is thanks in no small part to the precise drum fills and sound engineering of Brian Moen who handles both duties with the touch of a natural.
So then onto the tracks. Aside from ‘Crutch & Crane’ (above) you’ll find delight in: the soulful vocal breakdown at the end of ‘Hard As Nails’, another mind defyingly catchy melody in ‘Untitled 101′, the playful vocal delivery of ‘Down Down Down’ and one of those more personal moments in the very un-personally titled ‘Demo 01′.
Although these songs weren’t all finished on that one evening they were born, their bones were forged from the same creative dust. It’s a fact reflected in the album’s cohesion and leads us to dub Peter Wolf Crier’s Inter-Be a sleeper hit in the making.
