Cloud Nothings – Turning On

Wichita Recordings’ latest signing Cloud Nothings is 18 year old Cleveland, Ohio talent Dylan Baldi. His slightly slacker but completely enthralling lo-fi indie nuggets are already splashed all over the internet which is perhaps why Wichita have decided to gather them all together into Cloud Nothing’s debut full length release ‘Turning On’, a collection of EPs and limited release tracks rather than an album proper. But it ain’t half good.

The “album” then comprises the ‘Turning On EP’, ’Group Tightener’ seven inch single and two songs from an extremely limited release cassette. It does come across a little cut and paste but the similar feeling of the songs (tuneful riffs, oo-ee-oo hum alongs and a bit of a power pop jam here and there) and ultimately their quality pull it all together.
Highlights include opener ‘Can’t Stay Awake’, ‘Turning On’, ‘Water Turns Back’,'Strummin’, ‘Real Life’ and ‘Hey Cool Kid’ which comes out as a 7″ single on October 18th, a week before the album.
Be sure to catch Cloud Nothings during November when they play two London headline dates (Electrowerkz Nov 5th / White Heat Nov 23rd) as well as embarking on UK support tours for the wonderful Veronica Falls and Les Savy Fav.
