Girls – July Tour Footage

Christopher Owens of Girls kindly just sent over some footage of the band out on the road during their July tour. You’ll find snippets from the band’s set at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago as well as some great World Cup footage from Espana during the European leg of their tour. The soundtrack comes courtesy of London band The Field Mice’s ‘Star Of David’ taken from their 1991 album For Keeps.

Venture inside to catch the supremely entertaining video for Music Mule favourite Darwin Deez‘s upcoming single Radar Detector, due out April 5th on Lucky Number. What? Now that we’ve had a chance to properly wrap our ears around Dum Dum Girls forthcoming Sub Pop debut album ‘I Will Be’, we can safely say that these gals are the real deal. If you miss out on one of their debut London gigs in February then be sure to drag your ass along to this.

Extra points to front lady Dee Dee for being married to Brandon Welchez from another of our favourite bands Crocodiles. Brandon features a few album tracks like the stunning ‘Blank Girl’ (above) and sometimes joins them live.

Vampire Weekend @ Somerset House, Jan 14th.

Vampire Weekend play a free show above the ice rink at Somerset House this Thursday, January 14th to celebrate the release of their second album ‘Contra’ which came out on Monday. No advance tickets are required, just turn up on the day and join what will presumably be a rather large queue. There seems no word on the Somerset House or VW websites as to this happening but the fly says it is. The first 50 people get to ice skate too!

First of all we must put our hands up for criminally overlooking Eels excellent Hombre Lobo album in our 2009 best albums list. There’s only so many hours in the day to listen to music and somehow that one slipped through the net until recently. We’re not about to make the same mistake with Eels forthcoming album ‘End Times’. Take a listen to the beautiful Little Bird as a taster of things to come. It’s vintage Eels.

For Fans Of: EELS

Our little voyage of rediscovery of Eels, one of our favourite ever bands, kicked off after recently lapping up the autobiography of the band’s frontman, songwriter and general genius E (Mark Oliver Everett), the excellent ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’.

The longest gap between albums in Eels history, four years between 2005′s Blinking Lights and Other Revelations and Hombre Lobo in 2009, is followed by the shortest ever gap, a mere six months between Hombre Lobo and the forthcoming End Times which is due out on January 19th 2010.

On the band’s website E talks of the new record saying the END TIMES he speaks of isn’t about “Mayan calendar conspiracy theory bullshit,” he says, but, “the state of the desperate times we live in. The bottom line-ness of it all. The end of common decency. The loss of caring about doing a good job. These are tough times. Who can you trust? Walter Cronkite is just a ghost.”

He also concludes, “This will be some people’s favorite EELS album and some people’s least favorite EELS album. I’m prepared for that.”

What? 2010 was arguably Animal Collective’s year with their Merriweather Post Pavilion topping a lot of best album lists. Not ours mind. We liked it but mainly for Noah Lennox a.k.a. Panda Bear‘s contributions which were as ever; breathtaking, one man Beach Boys esque, trippy masterpieces. So it is with much joy we greet the news of Panda Bear’s upcoming show at Heaven Under The Arches.

Ok so here’s our favourite tracks that didn’t feature on our albums of 2009, with the small exception of numbers 1 and 2! These get a pass and here’s our warped logic -- it was perhaps the unbelievably high benchmark that these two tracks set that meant we were a little disappointed with the rest of their respective records, meaning they appeared a little further down our album list than we would have expected/liked. They are absolutely the best two tracks of the year and deserve SHOUTING about!

Hook & The Twin are London electronic duo and long time friends Tom Havelock and Marcus Efstratiou. They’ve released two of the singles of the year through Pure Groove Records and seemingly have a bright future ahead of them. ‘Bang Bang Cherry’ is one of those singles and showcases their slightly krautrock leaning electronic tendencies to perfection.
