One time The War On Drugs member Kurt Vile is back with his fourth album, his second for Matador Records, under his awesome Kurt Vile and The Violators moniker. Smoke Ring For My Halo follows 2009′s ‘Childish Prodigy’ and confirms Kurt as one of the finest young American songwriters out there with Bradford Cox (Deerhunter) perhaps being his main rival for the title right now.

Harlem – Hippies
Harlem are an unashamedly ramshackle, heart on sleeve garage rock’n'roll band from Texas. We’ve been enamoured with them since seeing them tear it up in their hometown Austin at SXSW 2009 and leaving the show with their self-released debut Free Drugs. The band have now signed to Matador who released their second album Hippies a few months back. With even more hooks than it’s predecessor, welcome to the funnest record of the year.

Tanlines – Real Life / Bejan
Tanlines are Brooklyn experimental pop/dance duo Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm. Any band with sense of humour enough to make a World Cup Remix of their own track, ‘Real Life’, with added Vuvuzela is likely to get close to our hearts! If the gloriously uplifting poly-rhythmic tropical synth sounds of Tanlines don’t stir your soul then you’re as dead as France’s World Cup effort. Ooo la la.

Follow That Bird! are a girl-girl-boy three piece from Austin, Texas that play ferocious yet melodious garage rock. It may not surprise you then to learn that they feature on Matador’s recent Austin inspired compilation, Causal Victim Pile: Austin 2010. The track that features on said comp is ‘The Ghost That Wakes You’, it’s below and we think you’ll like it. A lot.
