Tune Yards (5 Piece Band) @ Scala, June 23rd.
What? Merrill Garbus or Tune Yards is one hell of a talented lady from New England who combines elements of reggae, r’n'b and animal collective esque campfire singalongs, held together by her unique and powerful voice. Her 2009 album Bird Brains was one of the finest debuts of the past five years or so. Usually performed live with two people and loop pedals, this will be a special one off show with a 5 Piece band at the epic Scala in Kings Cross.

Tune Yards @ Cargo, Feb 15th.
Forget Dent May, last night was the turn of Tune Yards and her Magnificent Ukulele to step into the limelight at a sold out Cargo in East London. After an energetic opening from poorly named Canadians Think About Life followed by a less than impressive set from try not so hard Londoners Trash Kit, we were all eager to see how Merrill Garbus’ (Tune Yards) stunning debut album would translate to the live arena.

Tune Yards – Real Live Flesh
Merrill Garbus a.k.a. Tune Yards made one of the best debut albums of 2009, the beguiling ‘Bird Brains’, out through that somewhat legendary label 4AD. Part freak-folk bedroom musings, part lo-fi R’n'B diva and all delightfully crazy. Miss Tune Yards releases one of the album highlights ‘Real Live Flesh’ as a single on February 8th to coincide with a European tour kicking off in Brighton the day after. A suitably odd home-made video has been crafted too.

On Repeat: Tune Yards – Bird Brains
So we somehow missed listening to this one in time for our best of 2009 feature but should she be doing so in person Merrill Garbus a.k.a. Tune Yards would be in need of oxygen with the speed at which she is currently racing up our favourite albums list. No point dwelling on missed opportunities though as thankfully this 4AD signed New England native has talent by the sack full and seems here to stay.
